How to apply?

You will be issued a one-year visa. This authorization will permit you to stay in Spain for a year from the time you enter its territory. It serves as an initial residence permit. Then, you will be able to renew it every 2 years (that is the length of the renewal), until you get the permanent residency (after 5 years in the country).

Non-lucrative visa income requirements for a couple or a family

The amount is 400% of IPREM for the main applicant and 100% of IPREM for each family member. You show either regular passive income or savings for the first year:

➡️ Couple: €3,000 a month or €36,000 in savings
➡️ Couple with one child: €3,600 a month or €43,200 in savings
➡️ Couple with two children: €4,200 a month or €50,400 in savings

Passive income means money you receive without working: a pension, rent from property, dividends or interest.

How long does the non-lucrative visa take?

➡️ Preparing documents: 1–2 months; book the consulate appointment 1–2 months ahead, slots run out fast
➡️ Consulate decision: the legal term is 1 month; in practice 1–3 months, longer in July and August
➡️ After arrival: apply for your residence card (TIE) at the police within a month of entering Spain

Can you work remotely on a non-lucrative visa?

No. The non-lucrative visa does not allow any work in Spain, including remote work for a foreign employer or your own clients abroad. Do not show a work contract as proof of income. If you work online, apply for the Spain digital nomad visa instead: it lets you work remotely and can be requested from inside Spain.

Non-lucrative visa for retirees

The non-lucrative visa is the usual route for retirees who are not EU citizens. A state or private pension counts as passive income for the requirement above. Certificate of no criminal record should be with an apostille from the countries where you have lived for 6 months during the last five years and translated jurado.

Proof of financial means

Documents proving that you have enough money to live in Spain for the period of your residence - one or several bank accounts with a minimum total standing of €28,800 for one applicant (400% of IPREM). If you apply with family members, add €7,200 for each additional family member (for example, a married couple with a child needs €28,800 + €7,200 + €7,200 = €43,200).

If you’re retired, you must provide a retirement plan. The pension must be at least €2,400 a month (400% of IPREM), plus €600 for each family member.

It is possible to prove the total amounts with your properties in case these properties are rented. If you have properties and receive the rents and can prove it - you can use this income as well.

If you work online we do not recommend to show your contract as evidence for income as non-lucrative visa does not allow you to work in Spain, even online.

Submitting Your Application at the Spanish Consulate

To apply for a non-lucrative visa, you must schedule an appointment at the Spanish consulate in the country where you hold citizenship or legal residency.

In most countries, appointments are scheduled via email — the relevant address can be found on the official website of the consulate. In some countries, such as Turkey, applications are submitted through a BLS visa center.

It is highly recommended to check the specific appointment procedure, requirements, and list of documents directly on the website of the Spanish consulate responsible for your region.

👉 Please note: available appointment slots can fill up quickly, so it’s best to start checking for availability well in advance — ideally 1 to 2 months before your intended application date.‍

On the day of your appointment, you must appear in person at the consulate with the complete set of required documents. All applicants, including minors, must be present.

The processing time for the visa can take from 1 to 3 months. Be aware that during the summer holiday period (July–August), the timeline may be longer.

Also, it is important that your Schengen visa history is clean — overstaying in the Schengen Area may be grounds for a visa refusal.

Appointment at the police station and application for a residence card

Only after you receive your visa, you will need to go to the police station to submit your fingerprints in order to obtain your physical residence card (TIE). The appointment can be booked here.

You must select the police station in the region where you are officially registered (empadronado). When booking, choose the category TRÁMITES CUERPO NACIONAL DE POLICÍA and then select the option TOMA DE HUELLA, EXPEDICIÓN DE TARJETA.

The easiest way — to pay tasa in cash in the BBVA ATM with bar code scanner. You can do it up to 11 pm

How to check if the card is ready

If you need a cita to collect the card, then you can easily check if the card is ready — just select your office and service RECOGIDA DE TARJETA. On the next page you will see the current lot with cards.

If you can collect your card without cita, you then need a bit of imagination: you can call the police office and ask for the current number, you can visit them and check, you can look for TG, WA and Twitter chats, sometimes people publish there updates of lots. "Lote №" is the number that can be found on the document that was given to you after getting your fingerprints.

If there is no other way you can wait until the mentioned deadline.😉

Pay state fee and fill required forms

To pay the residence permit fee at the consulate, you must complete all fields and sign two copies of Form 790, Code 052, Section 2.1 (initial temporary residence authorization).
Payment can also be made online through the same link. In that case, you will need to present the payment confirmation generated on the website.
You will also need to pay a consular fee for the visa, which is typically around €80, but it's recommended to check the exact amount on the website of the Spanish consulate in the country of your citizenship or legal residence.

How to pay through an ATM?

👉 CaixaBank: with card of any other bank. An English option can be selected. The approximate path is: insert the card —> payments —> without bar/QR code —> A.E.T.A

👉 BBVA: with cash, the amount should approximate the value of the fee (EUR 10.94). An English option can be selected. The approximate path is: transactions without card —> payments —> bills, taxes and utilities —> with payment document —> enter data manually —> by form
