Option #1: Apply at the Spanish consulate of a country of citizenship/residence

‍You will be issued a one-year visa, which can be modified to a three-year residence upon arrival to Spain. This visa can be either used only for entry and immediate modification or you can live in Spain the whole year and start the modification process two months in advance. However, if you go for the second option, you will not be able to get a residence card during the first year. Moreover, the first year will not be counted towards long-term residency in the future.

Option #2: Apply from Spain

Legally on any visa/document, including tourist Schengen: apply at once for a three-year residence permit. Then it can be renewed for 2 more years. ✍ General terms

Jurado — translation made by a specially designated sworn translator. Some documents from the list should be translated by a jurado translator (you will see a letter J near the name of such document). The list of certified jurado translators can be found here. Apart from that there are many intermediaries, who work with several translators at once. We prepare for you a special list of trusted intermediaries.
Tasa — state fee for different procedures. In order to apply for Digital Nomad, you pay €73,26 for tasa No 790-038. It can be generated here, however you will need a digital signature. You can text us and we will help! You can pay tasa almost in every bank before 11 am or in ATM.
Cita — this word in Spain is used for a meeting, both formal and informal, even for a romantic date 🧡. In relation to different visas and residence permits it is used for an appointment to any state agency or police office, for example: You need a cita to do fingerprints for your residence card.
Padrón / empadronamiento — registration in your apartment. In Spain you can register even in a rented apartment. You do not need such registration for a Digital Nomad Residence, however it's better to do it.
Autónomo — a Spanish term for self employment. Self employed nomads submit a promise to register Autónomo once their application is approved.
NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) — identification number of a foreigner. It is assigned once for a lifetime. You can request it separately in the police, or you will get it after application for a residence.
Pareja de hecho — common law marriage, that can be officially registered in Spain and is valid for all EU countries. The requirements vary from province to province, for example6 in Catalonia for two foreigners is enough to have a joint padrón for more than 3 months. This document is signed by a notary and then is certified by a local Register of Common Law marriages.
TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) — you Spanish residence card, with photo and indicated NIE number. Can be used as your ID card in Spain.

In addition to the bank statement, attach relevant invoices or bills from the last 3 months that you have issued to clients. Sometimes, a payment intermediary (e.g., DEEL) may handle this for you.

For employees

By issuing residence permits to employed nomads, Spanish bureaucrats want to see confirmation that their employer will continue to pay social security contributions. If your employer is on the list of countries that have a bilateral agreement with Spain (spoiler: Russia is there), then you are lucky, request a certificate and apply. If not, then either the employer must register with the Spanish social security through the opening of a representative office in Spain, or switch to a service contract, wait 3 months and apply as self-employed. This certificate should be translated jurado.

For self-employed

The certificate confirming your registration as a self employed should meet the following requirements:

👉 self employment should be registered since more than 3 months ago.

If you don't have it, no worries! It can be substituted by an explanatory letter stating that the legislation of your client's country allows provision of services as a private individual. Pay state fee and fill required forms

To pay the residence permit fee at the consulate, you must complete all fields and sign two copies of Form 790, Code 038, Section 2.1 (initial temporary residence authorization).
Payment can also be made online through the same link. In that case, you will need to present the payment confirmation generated on the website.
You will also need to pay a consular fee for the visa, which is typically around €80, but it's recommended to check the exact amount on the website of the Spanish consulate in the country of your citizenship or legal residence.

How to pay through an ATM?

👉 CaixaBank: with card of any other bank. An English option can be selected. The approximate path is: insert the card —> payments —> without bar/QR code —> A.E.T.A

👉 BBVA: with cash, the amount should approximate the value of the fee (EUR 73.26). An English option can be selected. The approximate path is: transactions without card —> payments —> bills, taxes and utilities —> with payment document —> enter data manually —> by form

In order to apply you need a digital certificate which can be received only if you have a NIE (Spanish ID number for foreigners).

Appointment at the police station and application for a residence card

Only after you receive your visa, you will need to go to the police station to submit your fingerprints in order to obtain your physical residence card (TIE). The appointment can be booked here.

You must select the police station in the region where you are officially registered (empadronado). When booking, choose the category TRÁMITES CUERPO NACIONAL DE POLICÍA and then select the option TOMA DE HUELLA, EXPEDICIÓN DE TARJETA.

How to check if the card is ready

If you need a cita to collect the card, then you can easily check if the card is ready — just select your office and service RECOGIDA DE TARJETA. On the next page you will see the current lot with cards.

If you can collect your card without cita, you then need a bit of imagination: you can call the police office and ask for the current number, you can visit them and check, you can look for TG, WA and Twitter chats, sometimes people publish there updates of lots. "Lote №" is the number that can be found on the document that was given to you after getting your fingerprints.
