Many European countries have introduced the Digital Nomad visa - for people with a stable income and who can work from anywhere in the world. For example, Spain and Portugal have such permits. You even get a residence for three years in Spain.
Greece, which boasts beautiful beaches, rich culture, and delicious food, also decided to open an immigration program for digital nomads. This visa allows digital nomads to work remotely while living in Greece for up to a year and later can be extended to a resident permit.
Where can I apply?
There is no online application for a Digital Nomad Visa. You can apply for the Greek Nomad Visa at the Greek embassy or consulate in your country of residence.
Or if you are already in Greece (you have a valid EU visa or can enter the Schengen zone without limitations), you can apply for a two-year residence permit at the Aliens and Immigration Department.
What are the requirements?
👉 To enter Greece for remote work, you need to prove that you are a digital nomad and work online.
👉 Your employer should be registered outside Greece. If self-employed, you must submit confirmation of your business activity, corporate purpose, and business address.
👉 You must have a monthly salary of at least 3,500€.
How can I apply?
Step 1. Prepare the documents
To apply for the Greek Nomadic Visa, you will need some visa-specific and regular documents.
👉 A Declaration (cover) Letter. Here you should write that you are going to work remotely and not going to work for the company registered in Greece for the duration of your stay. You should tell all details about your job or company and confirm that you meet the financial requirements.
👉 Proof of Employment (e.g. contract).
👉 A Letter from Your Employer stating that you can complete your work remotely.
👉 Proof of Sufficient Funds (e.g. bank statement for the recent 3 months).
👉 A valid Passport for at least 6 months beyond the departure date.
👉 2 passport photos.
👉 Filled and signed Application Form. Under the section “Main purpose of the journey” select Other and specify “remote work”.
👉 Proof of Accommodation (e.g. rental agreement, hotel confirmation).
👉 Travel Insurance.
👉 Clear Criminal Record certificate.
👉 Return Flight Ticket. It can be not the ticket itself but the booking.
👉 Medical Certificate that confirms you don't suffer from any contagious diseases that may be of risk to Greece and its citizens.
Step 2.Apply for a visa at the consulate or embassy
Some Embosses and Consulates may accept applications through email or post, while others accept only in-person applications, so contact your local one before applying.
Step 3. Travel to Greece
After your visa is issued, you may travel to Greece and live there for one year.
Step 4. Extend your stay
If you are going to stay in Greece for longer than your visa duration, you must apply for a Digital Nomad Resident Permit at the Aliens and Immigration Department of the Decentralized Administration office. This permit is valid for up to two years and can be re-extended.
You’ll need either a booking confirmation or a residential lease, your visa, and your passport to apply for the permit.
The resident permit fee is 1,000€.
Can I bring my family?
If you are travelling with your family, the minimum financial requirement of 3,500€ per month increases by 20% for your spouse and 15% for each dependent child.
How can I apply as a self-employed person?
If you are a self-employed person, you need to have a registered business. You must submit confirmation of your business activity, corporate purpose, business address, and company name and registration number. You can also write a letter where you describe your role and obligations.
Can I work for a Greek company?
No, the Greek Nomad Visa is only available for remote workers who work for a company outside of Greece or run their own business. If you want to work for a Greek company, you will need to apply for a different type of visa.
What about taxes?
If you spend more than 6 months (182 days) a year in Greece, you become a tax resident, and you will have to pay income tax. This country has a progressive tax scale. Greek government introduced a 50% tax reduction for digital nomads during the first 7 years of their residency, but we recommend taking advice from a tax attorney or accountant, as there may be nuances.
Can I get a permanent residency or citizenship?
After five years of life in Greece without leaving the country for more than 6 months in a year, you can apply for a permanent resident permit. After seven years living in Greece you can apply for citizenship.
